The Great Mausoleum, Forest Lawn, Glendale
The imposing Forest Lawn-Glendale Memorial Park‘s Holly Terrace in The Great Mausoleum, is to be Michael Jackson‘s final resting place, despite brother Jermaine Jackson‘s desire for it to be at Neverland Ranch, and father Joe Jackson‘s wish for a Las Vegas burial as part of a new venue in honor of him. He is to be buried on what would have been his 51st birthday on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at 10:00 AM PST.
Glendale’s sprawling 300 acre Forest Lawn Memorial Park, founded in 1906, and innovated by Dr. Hubert Eaton in 1917 as an outer reflection of his inner belief of a joyous life after death. Three exact replica European churches are constructed on the landscaped grounds, namely: ‘The Little Church of the Flowers,’ ‘The Wee Kirk o’ the Heather,’ and ‘The Church of the Recessional’. Hollywood legends and showbiz superstars such as Humphrey Bogart, Mary Pickford, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Stan Laurel, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Walt Disney, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, James Stewart, and countless other luminaries of screen, stage, and song. It boasts the world’s largest wrought iron gates, which can be seen at 1712 South Glendale Avenue, Glendale, California.
The park’s sometimes over-zealous staff are notorious for confiscating visitors star burial guides and calling cops on trespassers, so it will be interesting to watch how it handles the potential tsunami of King of Pop fans who will inevitably flood the grounds over the coming days and years.
Digital Cheeseburger has to add that Forest Lawn-Glendale creeps us out. We refer to it as Death’s Disneyland. It is a theme park to man’s mortality. For some reason that escapes us, it is also a popular wedding spot with over 60,000 marriage ceremonies having taken place there, including Ronald Reagan to Jane Wyman, and Regis Philbin to his wife Joy. We cannot deny its popularity factor, however, with 250,000+ corpses on site and 1,000,000+ visitors a year!
