Legendary music producer and innovator of the ‘Wall Of Sound‘ a pioneering recording technique of building layers of music tracks into mini-symphonies, Phil Spector, 69, who was found guilty of the second-degree murder of the out of work actress hostessing at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, Lana Clarkson, and is currently serving out his 19-year sentence at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran*, California, is whining for a relocation. Spector, who shoved a loaded snub-nosed Colt Cobra revolver into her mouth and pulled the trigger, and who has a three-decades long documented history of pulling guns on women, states he is presently working with his attorneys “to get a better prison with people more like myself in it.“
Huh? Are there no convicted murderers, gun-lovers, and felonious madmen in Corcoran? Digital Cheeseburger is under the impression that people like you, Mr. Spector, are in it. The prison houses Charles Manson, diminutive leader of the murderous cult known as “The Family”, Cameron Hooker, convicted for the sexual assault and kidnapping of Colleen Stan (AKA, “the girl in the box”), Mikhail Markhasev, murderer of Ennis Cosby, son of entertainer Bill Cosby, and Sirhan Sirhan, assassin of United States Senator Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy.
However, Digital Cheeseburger has its liberal, peace-loving soft underbelly, too, so does comprehend fully the horrors Corcoran can, and does, present to all but the most callous among us. The penitentiary has a well-earned and tough-fought reputation as being a hard place to serve sentence. It had the highest rate of officer-involved shootings and killings in the U.S. There was the term “Gladiator School” regarding its SHU (Security Housing Unit), and the prisoner known as “Booty Bandit” was a busy man, allegedly, exchanging his “service” for staff-issued tennis shoes, etc. – for reasons of space and decorum restrictions we won’t elaborate further on either the school or the bandit.
Corcoran is a hellish environment to do time in. The time for an intelligent, wealthy, privileged and talented man such as Spector to want to be “with people more like [himself]” was before pulling out the gun, and not during incarceration for failing to regard the inevitable consequences of his lethal actions.
His wife, Rachelle, 29, hand-delivers prepackaged food to the facility each weekend, so he doesn’t have to visit the prison’s dining hall and can avoid any potential run-ins with other inmates. He remains in his tiny, single-prisoner cell 24/7, 400 miles geographically and an infinity emotionally from his sprawling 35-room, Alhambra hilltop faux-French mansion, known as Pyrenees Castle, located at 1700 Grand View Drive, Alhambra, Los Angeles.
Rachelle, whom he married just before his trial, currently lives in the mansion with his vast music memorabilia collection, and is vice president and CFO of his music companies. She oversees a catalog of hits generating seven-figure gross annual royalties, but claims very little net income is earned. The reportedly heavily-mortgaged property is on the market for sale to meet his legal expenses.

Rachelle, to this day, insists her husband is an innocent man, and orchestrates his appeals along with publicist Hal Lifson, who released details, included in this article, of Spector’s communications from prison.
*California State Prison, Corcoran (COR) is a male-only California state prison located in the city of Corcoran. It is also known as “Corcoran State Prison,” “CSP-COR,” “CSP-Corcoran,” “CSP-C,” or “Corcoran I.” It should not be confused with the newer California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran, which is just south of COR and is known as “Corcoran II.”
