Exploding Apple iPhones and iPods in France and the U.K. have European consumers complying with the U.S. giant’s logo catchphrase, and are thinking differently about the safety of Apple’s products, and the company’s secretive handling of a very serious situation.
Another six cases came to light this very morning in France of Apple’s popular iPhone’s screen exploding, cracking, or shattering with no apparent good reason, and causing actual bodily injury to the user. Ten complaints against iPhones have been recorded in France, so far; the first came in mid-August after a consumer received an eye injury.
In one case in the U.K., Apple allegedly made the family of a young girl sign a confidentiality order (AKA, a gagging order) before agreeing to refund her.
France’s consumer rights group, UFC-Que Choisir has demanded Apple fess up about the potential hazards with its iPod and iPhone products. UFC added:
“We want to know if this is an isolated incident as they claim, or a real problem involving the iPhone — in which case, what are they planning by way of compensation and to prevent it happening again?”
The European Commission has asked all 27 European Union nations to present data on complaints of the Apple devices to RAPEX, the community’s rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products.
Alan Hely, head of communications at Apple Europe said:
“We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don’t have anything further to add.”
This comes hot on the heels of another problem Apple had in the U.S. recently, when it was accused of trying to silence 15 cases of iPod music players overheating and bursting into flames.
