Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been caught by our media friends at NBC4 flouting the city’s 3-month-old law restricting water usage in response to severe drought conditions existing in L.A.
Only this morning the mayor was proudly boasting that most Angelinos are complying with the city’s sprinkler restrictions, thereby record quantities of precious water are being conserved. Ah, but not so at Getty House, the mayor’s official residence in Hancock Park.
The law states that garden sprinklers be operated on Mondays and Thursdays only.
NBC4 captured on camera the mayor’s sprawling back yard sprinklers spraying restricted water at 2 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays. All days that are in complete violation of the law.
When initially confronted with the facts, Villaraigosa denied any truth to the illegal activity. But later accepted it and blamed it on “a program malfunction” of the sprinkler system.
However, the mayor is not the only city department guilty of illegal watering:
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been seen running sprinklers during illegal hours on several L.A. freeway verges. NBC4 captured on film sprinklers spewing restricted water two hours a day, seven days a week on the 134 Freeway at Toluca Lake.
Los Angeles City Fire Station No. 61 on West 3rd Street was operating sprinklers every night at 7 p.m. throughout July.
Digital Cheeseburger says of NBC4’s great investigative journalism: We toast with agua your uncovering of the L.A. Watergate!
