DJ AM's body removed from his New York apartment
New York Police Department states DJ AM‘s death was not a suicide, despite having had to break mirrors propped against his front and bedroom doors to gain entry into his New York City SoHo apartment. An autopsy revealed six of the powerful painkillers OxyContin in his stomach and one in his throat, suggesting he’d gone unconscious prior to being able to swallow the final pill. On scene, a bag of crack cocaine was found under his body and a crack pipe nearby, plus prescription medication bottles. An opened Valentine’s Day card from his girlfriend, American Apparel model Hayley Wood (who denies reports they had broken up) lay by his side, along with seven photographs of the couple. The initial autopsy results were inconclusive, so the coroner’s office is conducting toxicology tests that should take several weeks. New York City Medical Examiner spokesperson Ellen Borakove said:
“The cause of death was inconclusive because we need to do additional testing. The testing would include toxicology and tissue testing. We don’t expect any results for several weeks.”
DJ AM, born Adam Goldstein, had a history of drug abuse but recently claimed to have been sober for 11 years. Before his death, he filmed a substance-abuse intervention show with MTV called “Gone Too Far“, its mission to warn young people about the perils of drug abuse. The show on which he talked of his previous addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy, and other drugs was slated to air this coming October.
Documents filed today in Los Angeles by Goldstein’s mother, Andrea Gross, show her son was trying to sell his Hollywood Hills home and his attorneys were in settlement discussions in a lawsuit seeking $20 million in damages filed over a plane crash which had killed four people and severely injured Goldstein. According to the records, he earned $400,000 a year and died without a will, so Gross is his legal heir.
