Mere moments into her acceptance speech after receiving an MTV Video Music Award, the Moonman, in the Best Female Video category for “You Belong With Me,” which beat out Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” Taylor Swift’s victory was besmirched by Kanye West invading the stage, snatching the microphone from her, only to rant on about Beyoncé deserving the award more:
“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”
Well, nothing much new there from the talentless West, who each year fuels the media with a fresh outburst of tantrum and tedium. At the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Denmark, West stormed the stage after his “Touch The Sky” lost to Justice Vs. Simian’s “We Are Your Friends.” He ranted, “Oh hell no, you guys won already. Share the wealth. F**k this!” Then at the VMAs in Las Vegas, after losing in all five of the categories he was nominated in, West went into a rant backstage, “I lost to the f**king Black Eyed Peas last year, man. I’m never f**king coming back to MTV.”
Some of you may wonder why West wasn’t later made chew on the sidewalk outside Radio City Music Hall by four burly NYPD cops forcing him face-down as they cuffed his sad sorry ass. We sure do wonder. At the 2000 VMAs, Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford was arrested after climbing a set piece following Rage losing out in the Best Rock Video category to Limp Bizkit. Commerford was charged with assault and resisting arrest.
Here’s the video clip of West’s stage-storming:
Digital Cheeseburger is left in a quandary, unsure whether MTV suits egged West on into staging another controversial mad dog act so the media would have some VMA fodder to feed their readers and viewers the next day. Or, did boss man rapper and husband of Beyoncé, Jay-Z, spit a little demon into West ear about pushing his wife further into the spotlight? Or, maybe it was just down to too much Hennessy being in his already incensed mind. What do you think? Let us know if you believe the West Stage Storm was stage-managed, or booze-fueled, or just West Being West.
