Anna Nicole Smith lawyer-companion Howard K. SternHoward K. Stern, 40, the lawyer and long-term companion of the late Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, 39, has had an additional five felony counts dumped on him in his role in the model’s 2007 death. The extra charges are four counts of obtaining fraudulent prescriptions, and one count of prescribing, administering or dispensing controlled substances to an addict. His fellow defendants, Smith’s psychiatrist, Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, 61, and her internist, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, 41, had already been charged likewise.

Smith had been prescribed forty-four different medications, including Morphine, Klonopin, Topomax, Valium, Methadone, Dalmane, Soma, Paxil, Dilaudid, and chloral hydrate a dangerous sedative used in veterinary anesthetics, also known as “knockout drops” when mixed with alcohol and used to make a Mickey Finn. Her autopsy revealed chloral hydrate played a major role in her death. Although all the drugs were for Smith, the prescriptions were made out to different names, including Michelle Chase, Anne Marshall, Susie Wong, Jean Smith, Howard K. Stern, Ben Thompson, Ann Smith, and Ben Stern.

Smith’s nannies informed investigators that, when Eroshevich frequently visited Smith in the Bahamas, she and Stern:

“would crush pills, heat them to turn them into liquid and inject Smith.”

A statement of probable cause from California Department of Justice Special Agent Jennifer Doss states:

“Several of the drugs found in Smith’s hotel room are the same drugs that caused her death, and all the prescription drugs were prescribed by Dr. Khristine Eroshevich.”

Stern’s attorney, Steven Sadow says:

“I don’t think anyone can say that Howard K. Stern didn’t love Anna and didn’t attempt, in his way, to do the best thing for her.”

Digital Cheeseburger says in response to Sadow, “Being an enabler is not demonstrative of love, but is an evil of not loving someone enough to get help to release them from the jaws of serious addiction. Lethal addiction, in this case.”
