David Letterman (l) Joe Halderman (r)
CBS “Late Show” host David Letterman, 62, is caught up in a sex scandal involving himself and several woman working for his production company “Worldwide Pants.” TV producer Robert J. “Joe” Halderman of CBS true crime show “48 Hours” is alleged to have attempted to blackmail Letterman in an extortion plot of $2 million. Joe Halderman, said to be in deep debt, pleaded not guilty on Friday in a Manhattan court as he was arraigned on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years in prison. Addressing the judge concerning, but not elaborating on, Halderman’s debts, Assistant District Attorney Judy Salwen, said: “The evidence is compelling, it shows the defendant is desperate, and he is capable of doing anything.” Bail was set at $200,000.
At time of going to press, it is unknown how many women were involved in Letterman’s romantic office affairs. He married longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March, they had been dating since 1986 and have a son, Harry, born November 2003. He is renowned for his caustic gags cruelly mocking politicians for their sexual transgressions, which now makes him appear as a major league hypocrite.

Stephanie Birkitt
It is rumored that the connection Halderman has to Letterman is a 34-year-old woman who works on the “Late Show” staff and used to work at “48 Hours,” Stephanie Birkitt, she has often appeared on camera with Letterman in comedy skits. There has been no statement made to the media by Birkitt at this time.
Halderman’s lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said Halderman worked at CBS for 27 years and had no prior criminal record. Outside court, Shargel said, “This story is far more complicated than what you [have] heard.” But he stopped before giving details.
Halderman allegedly left an envelope in Letterman’s car early Sept. 9. According to authorities, he wrote that he needed “to make a large chunk of money” and said that Letterman’s world would “collapse around him” if damaging information about him were made public. Three meetings between Letterman’s lawyer and Halderman subsequently took place in Manhattan’s Essex House Hotel, the last two with the lawyer recording the conversations and prosecutors listening in, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said. At the last meeting, on Wednesday, the lawyer gave Halderman a bogus check for $2 million which Halderman deposited Thursday in a Connecticut bank and was arrested later that day outside CBS News‘ Manhattan office.
Digital Cheeseburger concludes David Letterman would have been better served keeping his Worldwide Pants up, and to have walked as he talked against Washington D.C.‘s ethically challenged folks he’s made a career out of spitting one-liners on.
