L.A. County’s Judge Lawrence J. Mira today expunged the 2006 drunk driving conviction against Hollywood actor Mel Gibson, in a 90-second hearing.
Gibson was arrested in Malibu following a series of controversial incidents that made worldwide headlines. The actor was stopped by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy on Pacific Coast Highway, July 2006, after his Lexus sedan was clocked going over 85 mph. A breathalyzer test showed his blood-alcohol level to be .12%; the legal limit is .08%. Deputy Sheriff James Mee was subjected to a barrage of anti-Semitic rants by Gibson who “bolted” from custody, and had to be chased down and handcuffed. During the incident, Gibson’s comments included:“I own Malibu. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Then he asked the deputy, who is Jewish, “Are you a Jew?”
As part of his conviction, Gibson agreed to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, appear in public service announcements, and pay $1,300 in fines. As this was his first drunk-driving offense, he was eligible to have the conviction removed from his record following successful completion of the terms of his probation.
