Even the Mayans are weary of all the 2012 hype, and with the forthcoming release of the movie bearing the ominous date and featuring earthquakes, meteor showers, and a tsunami dumping an aircraft carrier on the White House, Guatemalan Mayan Indian elder Apolinario Chile Pixtun (pictured left) will be under a greater still barrage of questions from those worried about the ancient Mayan calendar “running out” on Dec. 21, 2012. That date represents zero-hour doomsday, to many.
Pixtun insists the apocalyptic theories are of Western origin, and are not Mayan ideas. Rather than heralding a cataclysmic ending, the Mayans see 2012 as beginning an era of renewal and transformation. There exist several ancient Mayan sites bearing inscriptions for dates around the year 4772. A fact that is conveniently obscured by Western-fueled mythology and the curious need to see bogeymen threatening on the horizon!
