Lawyers representing artist Shepard Fairey, who created the famous Obama “HOPE” image, say he based it on a photograph taken by The Associated Press photographer Manny Garcia of the then-Senator Barack Obama at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, and not another picture, as the artist had claimed earlier to them.
The AP has previously filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Fairey on his alleged use of their photograph, to which he countersued.
Fairey now says he was mistaken about which AP photo he based his work on and that he attempted to cover up his wrongdoing:
“In an attempt to conceal my mistake I submitted false images and deleted other images.”
