The world’s greatest rock band, U2, performed on the world’s largest stage last night in the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Los Angeles, to that venue’s biggest crowd ever, almost 97,000, in arguably the best concert ever on the L.A. leg of their worldwide “360° Tour,” promoting the “No Line On The Horizon” album. As a gift back to their fans, U2’s lineup, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr., insisted last night’s show be streamed live on YouTube in the first live concert broadcast of its kind, accessible throughout the entire seven continents. The Rose Bowl filming will be on an upcoming DVD release.

As brilliant as the performance from the Irish rockers was, it was impossible to overlook the 600-pound gorilla in the room – that being the band’s amazing stage, known as “The Claw” or “The Space Station,” designed by Willie Williams and inspired by the “Theme Building” at LAX it towered 170 feet above the ground, and spanned 210 feet across the Rose Bowl’s turf.
Centerpiece of the stage was a mammoth 360-degrees LED screen some 79-feet around and 72-feet tall, containing a half-million transformable light-emitting diodes (FLX) costing $8 each plus labor and shipping charges. The band tours with three separate stage sets transported by 30 trucks to allow a smooth jump on setting up and tearing down, each set costs around $30 million, takes 334 laborers five days to construct and three to dismantle. Not including the sky-high costs involved in constructing the stage at each venue, expenses for running the 360° Tour are an out of this world $750,000 a day. Profits won’t be realized until the second main leg (North America 2009) of the four-legged tour; the first 38 shows’ ticket sales grossed $276,000,000.

The encore consisted of songs “Ultraviolet (Light My Way),” “With or Without You,” and “Moment of Surrender,” where Bono donned a lasers-embedded suit shining through the stage’s violet-colored lighting scheme, while singing into and swinging on an LED-illuminated steering wheel-shaped microphone that floated mid-stage on a fixture attached to the scaffolding above.
