Quintessential English composer, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, 61, has been diagnosed as having prostate cancer. A spokeswoman announced, “the condition is in its very early stages. Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year.”
Webber’s works include the stage musicals “Cats,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” and “Sunset Boulevard.”
His awards include seven Tonys, three Grammys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, two International Emmys, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, The Kennedy Center Honor, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for live theatre, the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service, and has been inducted into the American Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. He received a knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1992, and created an honorary life peer in 1997.
