He says his new film and ‘Shutter Island’ had ‘some similarities in tone, but they couldn’t have been executed any different.’

2010 is apparently the year Leonardo DiCaprio screws with your head. First he gave us the nightmarish dreamscape of Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” a film about the tenuous nature between delusion and reality. Now comes “Inception,” the Christopher Nolan-directed thriller in which DiCaprio plays a dream thief who’s constantly spinning a metallic top because it’s the only way he can tell if he’s in the real world rather than a make-believe one.
“I’ve been having a lot of fun playing protagonists that you can’t trust,” he told MTV News. “That’s been the objective in both these films, is to say lines and not necessarily mean what I say. It’s been a lot of fun, and I’ve got to do it with some pretty talented filmmakers, certainly with Scorsese and now with Chris Nolan.”
Yet for all their thematic similarities, these are two vastly different films. Starring DiCaprio as a detective investigating a disappearance at an insane asylum, “Shutter Island” unfolds like a psychedelic onion, one layer after another peeling away to reveal new understandings of the story — right up until a climax that forces you to recalibrate everything you’ve accepted since the opening scene. “Inception,” conversely, lays out all its storytelling cards from the start, and it’s up to you to sort through them in an attempt to deduce just what in the heck is truly going on.
Is that vague? Good. It’s best to know as little as possible before buying your “Inception” ticket when the film opens Friday. Suffice to say, though, the two films remain connected at least on the surface.
“They had some similarities in tone, but they couldn’t have been executed any different,” DiCaprio told us. “This film is just beyond anything I’ve ever seen or experienced in my life.
“It’s a very rare occurrence where you can do a movie that exists on four different planes simultaneously,” he added. “That was the immediate intrigue: delving into the world of the subconscious with Chris Nolan. What could be more fun?”
Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.”
