Wiz Khalifa’s been bubbling in the underground for some time now, but the Pittsburgh native broke out this year with his stellar mixtape Kush & OJ. The collection earned him supporters as diverse as Miami rap star Rick Ross and Atlanta mixtape kingpin DJ Drama, not to mention a recent nomination for Mixtape of the Year at the “Sucker Free Summit.” His fellow nominees include Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Jadakiss and Young Jeezy; winners will be announced Sunday at noon on ET on MTV2.
As Wiz enjoys his status as a rising young spitter, Drama continues to champion the upstart, calling him a fresh addition to the hip-hop landscape.
“I’m digging Wiz. I’m digging what he’s doing, especially coming from a place like Pittsburgh,” Drama told MTV News. “If you go to Pittsburgh — I’ve spent a lot of time there — for the last year or two, the first name that’s coming up in Pittsburgh is Gucci Mane. It’s not necessarily that [Wiz] is a product of his environment, but it’s always good to see someone put a city on the map [like Wiz has].”
Back in April, Wiz’s loyal followers, the Taylor Gang, bombarded Twitter upon Kush & OJ‘s release and made the tape a trending topic under the hashtag #KushandOrangeJuice.”
These days, the “This Plane” MC seems to be racking up nominations: He’s currently a top-five contender in the race for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” also to be announced Sunday. And Wiz isn’t letting all of the accolades slow him down. He’s in the studio working on his major-label debut, which he hopes will break him into the mainstream and help take his woozy rhymes up the charts.
“Just staying in the studio, always working, always putting out mixtapes, material for people to listen to, capitalizing off of whatever I do,” Khalifa told MTV News earlier this year. “If something does well, you got to keep going after that. You can’t get comfortable after that and think that’s it. So just constantly working and reinventing myself, making smart moves — and having great fans.”
“Sucker Free Summit” Mixtape of the Year Nominees:
Wiz Khalifa – Kush & OJ
Lil Wayne – No Ceilings
Fabolous – There Is No Competition 2
Jadakiss – The Champ Is Here 3
Young Jeezy – Trap or Die 2
Gucci Mane – The Burrprint: The Movie 3-D
Tune in to MTV2′s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon to find out who wins!
