We have new photos and a video to complement our earlier report on Marah (trans. ‘Happy’) Land Zoo in Gaza City is so broke and under harsh animal importation restrictions by Israel, its owner, Mohammed Bargouthi, saved $40,000 in smuggling costs by dying donkeys’ coats in stripes to resemble zebras.
Nidal Barghouthi, whose father owns the Marah Land Zoo, said the two white female donkeys were striped using masking tape and women’s hair dye, applied with a paint-brush:

“The first time we used paint but it didn’t look good. The children don’t know so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new.”

Gaza’s Palestinian population is impoverished thanks to economic isolation by Israel‘s embargo against Palestine‘s Islamist Hamas rulers, who refuse to end armed resistance against the Jewish state. Smugglers have constructed secret tunnels under the border with Egypt to bypass the Israeli sanctions, but are too costly for the zoo to use as it charges a meager $15 entrance fee per visitor busload.

Oakley Junior, an abandoned baby gray squirrel, instantly formed a bond with Central Park, Peterborough, UK park ranger, Mark Swift.

Oakley is named after the park’s mascot.

“I was going to train him to pick up litter. He’d be happy with the wage, we get peanuts here,” quipped Mr Swift.
